“We’re not really trying to be a wine bar,” says Hoodburger co-founder Matt Shaw of Hoodburger 848, the new licensed add-on to Inglewood restaurant that he and his brother Tom have opened. in 2019. I’m not convinced.
Admittedly, the new Hoodburger bar extension (the Shaw brothers took over the barber next to the restaurant earlier this year) doesn’t scream “wine bar” to begin with. When it comes to first impressions, the space looks more like a canteen than an enoteca. But once your eyes have adjusted to the space – and you’ve prepared a table and chair for your visit – cool little details emerge. The beautiful framed art and the pictures on the wall. The warm aesthetic of exposed bricks and white walls. The friendly patter of the friendly staff who are happy to talk about alcohol with, rather than To, guests. And then you notice the well-stocked fridge, stocked with colorful labels taken mostly from the lo-fi wine camp, although more traditional wines can also be found.
Still, while some – including your pen pal – will view Hoodburger 848 as a place to primarily drink wine, Shaw just wants it to be a comfortable place for everyone to enjoy.
“The response we got from a lot of people is that it’s just a very inviting and relaxed atmosphere, and that’s what we’ve been looking for,” says Shaw. “A lot of people can be a little put off by stereotypical wine bars. The emphasis is on wine, but we also have some great local beers and some random whiskeys and spirits that we love.
The other point of difference, of course, is the ability to savor these drinks with Hoodburger’s suite of burgers and sandwiches, similar to the arrangement between Flipside and neighboring bars Mrs Brown and Albert’s. While diners must order food from the restaurant, staff will forward it to the bar extension via a neat service window that has been installed between the two spaces. (The idea, Shaw says, came from a dive bar in Toronto that used to deliver burgers from a neighboring A&W to eaters.)
A small selection of cheese and meat plates and dips have also been added to the restaurant menu to meet the needs of the new bar. While the expansion was designed to allow Hoodburger patrons to enjoy an alcoholic beverage with their food, patrons are also free to drink at the bar without ordering food.
