Brian Lara Rum Eatery is inspired by the tropical coasts of the West Indies but has made its menu accessible to the South African palate. Whether you’re in the mood for chicken, steak or seafood, the menu includes exciting options such as jerk chicken, seafood curry and a very tasty pan of mussels served with toast to mop up the broth. butter. The lamb skewers are particularly good – tender cubes of lamb with red onions and red peppers in a spicy jerk seasoning. The fat of the lamb is perfectly compensated by a fresh summer salad. Vegans will love a new twist on traditional Trinidad doubles – a lentil curry with pineapple salad and flatbread.
Cocktails are the order of the day here, and you won’t be disappointed with a tropical piña colada served in a pineapple or a rum-bolstered lime mai tai. You’ll want to go full Jack Sparrow! The wine list is limited and available by the glass or the bottle. There is a range of whites, reds, pinks and sparkling, but obviously cocktails are the order of the day.
Making a reservation is easy and you are warmly welcomed upon arrival. The free fried dough and salsa placed on each table is a nice touch and a nice change from the usual bread basket. The servers are fun, attentive and chatty but never intrusive. They are knowledgeable about the menu and make helpful suggestions.
Brian Lara has a tropical vibe that’s perfect for after-work drinks, date nights, dinner with friends, or even a Tinder date. The decor will transport you to a sweet beach cafee and you’ll swear you can almost hear the waves crashing outside, an incredible feat in the heart of Joburg. The atmosphere is laid back and fun; you can really let your hair down and have a great time. Great for dates or drinks after work.
