A unique underground wine bar in Preston, described as a “hidden gem”, receives rave reviews on TripAdvisor.

Hidden in a cellar under Lancaster Road, Wine Down offers over 300 wines and 200 grape varieties.

These include organic, biodynamic and orange wines.

The local itself has a unique history and has been a saddlery, a printing house and the canteen of the bus drivers.

More recently, it also housed the Duk Tapas restaurant and the Piccolino Italian restaurant.

The owners of the bar think that “life is too short to drink boring wine” which can be said for all of its drinks as it has over 30 sherries, ports, 35 gins, 30 rums, 45 whiskeys, 13 vodkas and 12 vermouths.

There is also a lot of tequila, brandy, and liqueurs.

Its deli counter is also home to an incredible selection of local, British and Continental cheeses and cold meats, complemented by pork pies, hummus, olives, homemade chutneys and more.

The attention to detail brought to the food and drinks served, combined with the atmosphere of the cellar, has won the hearts of customers time and time again.

The bar’s Trip Advisor rating is 5 bubbles with 153 “excellent” reviews out of 172 with 14 reviews rated “very good”.

Seaside00419927982 said the wine bar is a ‘must see’ in Preston, saying: “Great atmosphere, fantastic service. Nice place, wish it was local as we would definitely be regulars! Hidden gem !!! !!! “

Lisa_SC5 wrote: “I have been drinking wine several times and loved the whole experience.

“So many wines can be a bit overwhelming, but the friendly staff will be happy to provide advice. Great selection of cheeses. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. During the lockdown I ordered a delivery which was wonderful. I look forward to it. to go back! “

NeillD2019 called it a “cute little place hidden away”. He also said: “You will walk past this place a few times before you notice it. You will look down wet stairs and think ‘no, a little harsh’, but you will hear some laughter and that will (sic) your interest.

“You will descend the stairs and find a unique, cozy and intimate place filled with wonderful works of art, collectibles, an insane amount of wine and a selection of weird and wonderful cheeses – local and foreign. . “
