A Mehak restaurant worker said, “My employer had bought newspapers from a junkyard and used them to wrap food items for customers, as most restaurants do. It’s a normal practice, but we didn’t realize that the newspapers had images of Hindu gods. We didn’t want to hurt anyone. »
A family member of Taalib, who has run the restaurant since 2012, said newspapers had been used for years to wrap food items. “Does anyone look carefully at a newspaper’s headlines or photos before using it as a wrapper? Can someone be sent to jail for this? It has never hurt the feelings of nobody.” He declined to comment further, saying the family wanted Taalib’s bail before anything else.
Explaining the arrest, a police officer said: “Upon investigation, we found that a local Hindi daily had published photos of Hindu deities during the ‘Navratra’ festival earlier. This paper had been used to wrap food. food by Taalib.”
Circle officer Jitendra Kumar said: “After receiving a complaint on Sunday evening, the police rushed to the hotel and seized the offending material. As the case is sensitive, we immediately filed an FIR and arrested the restaurant owner for hurting the religious feelings of a particular community.
