Retail investors have taken the financial world by storm over the past 18 months. Triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and commission-free trading, everyday investors have traded more stocks, cryptocurrencies and options in the past year than ever before.
Jonas Lupton, a popular stock trader with over half a million Twitter followers, came up with the idea of hosting an event for retail investors, most of whom have never met in person. After months of planning and logistical work, the FinTwit 2021 conference is scheduled to take place next weekend in Orlando, Florida. Benzinga is the media sponsor of the event.
Why this is important: For many traders, this was the first time they engaged in stock trading. Thanks to the boom in retail investing, many influencers have made a name for themselves.
Hugh Henna and Dan Chevalier launched the “Pennies Going In Raw” podcast just over a year ago. The podcast has become a favorite with young investors, and the podcast quickly rose to the top of the charts.
“For me, it’s all about community,” Henne said. “Trading can be lonely, especially at the beginning… that’s why I’m excited for Orlando. Any chance to go out, hang out with friends and possibly attend a soccer game is not something I would like to miss.
Many FinTwit personalities have been excited to put faces to the names they’ve seen on Twitter for about 18 months.
“I have been interacting with the FinTwit community on a daily basis for many years now and really look forward to meeting the people behind the tweets in person,” said Ben bennett. He runs the Twitter account @PatternProfits.

Event details: Conference attendees have a busy itinerary to look forward to. Kicking off the weekend, Friday will feature a cocktail hour from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET for FinTwit personalities to mingle and meet followers.
On Saturday, several speakers will take the stage to talk about their trading experiences and the lessons they have learned. The speakers are Henne, Bennett, Brian Shannon, Jake Wujastyk, Brian Feroldi, Richard Molgen and Muji and Peter.
After the speakers, there will be a buffet lunch followed by a pool party. The pool party will feature a lazy river for traders to relax from their stressful trades.
“The man-made river is what excites me the most,” said Luc Jacobi, vice president of Benzinga.
On Sunday, Lupton organized a trip to a local sports bar for attendees to watch football and eat wings. The end of the conference, at the sports bar, sums up the conference’s mission perfectly: to build the FinTwit community and instill camaraderie.
