La Cabra is Carlton’s new modern and colorful Mexican bar and restaurant

Lygon Street’s iconic restaurant strip continues to expand its multicultural horizons, with new additions arriving, La Cabra. Launching this week, the boldly colored modern Mexican restaurant is the brand’s fourth outpost, joining a stable that includes locations in Hampton, Hawthorn and St Kilda.

Like its siblings, the Carlton newcomer rocks a playful outfit brimming with pops of bright color. La Cabra’s neon logo of a horned goat’s head – an assured reference to GOAT – peers down from a wall.

The menu is a contemporary Melbourne ode to familiar Mexican classics. Start with Tajin-spiced calamari, stuffed jalapenos, and crispy hand-cut tortillas loaded with the usual nachos.

A lineup of seven tacos features toppings considered fried fish paired with jalapeno salsa and papaya salad; and a cactus number with feta, beans and salsa verde. The burritos feature ingredients like chimichurri pulled lamb, stewed beef brisket, and not-so-Mexican falafel; Plus, you’ll find a solid offering of fajitas, enchiladas, and burgers.

The assorted liquor list is suitably festive, with several margarita styles, an accessible tequila selection, and plenty of cocktail carafes to share. Try a carafe of There’s Something About Mary — made on Four Pillars, rosemary and blood orange — or upgrade your Monday with $10 margin from 5 p.m.

For those who prefer their boozy weekend brunch with a Mexican twist, La Cabra also serves up a bottomless brunch situation every Saturday and Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. $69 per person will get you a parade of bites including tacos, quesadillas, and churros, plus 90 minutes of unlimited refills on your choice of drink.
