Christopher Smith has been promoted to Executive Director of Enrollment Management and New Student Engagement at Kansas State University Salina.
This new position will focus on engaging new students throughout the recruitment process and will have oversight responsibilities for auxiliary food and bookstore services on campus. Smith will work closely with these service units to provide the campus with convenient, customer-focused and cost-effective goods and services.
Smith joined K-State Salina in 2017 as Executive Director of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Financial Aid. During this time, he was tasked with transforming the recruiting process. His goal was to ensure that students remain at the center of every decision he makes, to understand the real needs and motivations of the students, to build confidence and to provide real value.
“Its successful implementation of the consultative approach has resulted in four years of growth in the number of new freshmen and three years of on-campus housing at full capacity,” said Alysia Starkey, CEO and Dean of K-State Salina. “We are delighted that he is using his proven talent in other areas of new student engagement.”

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, Smith holds a doctorate in educational philosophy with a concentration in higher education leadership from Capella University. He received a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix and a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in criminal justice from Valdosta State University. Prior to transitioning his career to higher education, he owned and operated several high-end quick service restaurants and wine bars.
