Everyone will find something they love at this chic downtown restaurant

From juicy burgers to savory Asian salmon dishes, the Central Kitchen+ Bar will have your mouth watering. Owner Dennis Archer, Junior wanted to create a welcoming restaurant for everyone.

He was first inspired to open a restaurant in downtown Detroit by seeing the growth of the city in the early 2010s. As he puts it, he noticed “there’s nowhere to go, where I really want to go”. At the time, restaurants in the area were pretty much at two extremes, fancy and expensive, or rather dive bars and fast food. While on vacation with his friends, the idea germinated and he started looking for a place.

He came across a spot in the First National building, right downtown near Campus Martius. He remembered doing deliveries there as a kid working for a law firm and knew he had found his place.

The place was stripped, allowing Archer to make it his own. He decided to pay homage to the building’s history in the design of the restaurant. You can spot an old vault from when it was the First National Bank, and the original columns and ceilings are exposed to give the place its unique character. They also found historic pictures of Detroit and hung them on the wall as giant murals.

The name itself is a reminder of history. In the area opposite the restaurant, there used to be a large public market called Central Market. The restaurant takes its name from there.

The menu has changed a bit since they opened in 2015, but they’ve kept the favorites and introduced some new ones. Always popular, their homemade burger is made with a special blend of meat, tomato jam and beef bacon. A classic bar dish they put their own spin on is the Mediterranean wings which are served with marinated feta, olives and lemon. They also have a variety of handhelds, tacos, and salads to choose from. Recently, their brunch has become very popular, and a great dish to try on this menu is the avocado toast, which is topped with a salad of arugula and grilled artichokes and a fried egg.
