A day after the Delhi government announced its plan for the redevelopment of five popular markets in the city, the New Delhi City Council on Tuesday announced that several markets under its jurisdiction such as Khan Market, Sarojii Nagar, Yashwant Place, Khanna Market , Prithviraj Market and Netaji Nagar Market will be “completely renovated” in the next two to three years.
Satish Upadhyay, deputy chairman of the council that manages the New Delhi area, including the Lutyens area and the diplomatic enclave, said: “Work has already started at Yashwant Place market near Chanakyapuri, where a new look and a new facade are in progress. given to the market and the infrastructure is being upgraded. We are also consulting traders in Khan Market for the rejuvenation of this popular center. Stakeholder consultation is ongoing in several other locations including Prithviraj Market, Netaji Nagar and Laxmibai Nagar. Nauroji Nagar Market has already been relocated to its new avatar in Kidwai Nagar,” Upadhyay said.
In addition to revamping the 50-year-old two-story market, NDMC will also develop a seven-story Yashwant Place shopping complex near the popular shopping district. An NDMC official associated with the project said tenders had been issued for the ₹119 crore project. “The building will be built on the site of the former ‘Rendez-vous restaurant et bar’ and it will have a total covered area of 8,900 square meters, including a three-storey basement,” the official added.
Council member Girish Sachdeva said the Sarojini Nagar market revamp plan is also in its final planning stages and will include a complete overhaul of public areas and a three-storey underground car park. On Monday, BJP council member and leader Kuljeet Chahal had opposed the Delhi government, including Sarojini Nagar, over its plan to overhaul the market.
“The Sarojini Nagar redesign proposal was discussed at the board meeting held on November 28, 2021, during which the board members unanimously agreed on the detailed project report. It would be discussed with all stakeholders before being finalized,” Sachdeva added.
Ashok Randhawa, chairman of the Sarojini Nagar Mini Markets Association, said the Delhi government and NDMC should cooperate on the redevelopment plan. “There are several issues related to basic civic infrastructure such as toilets, sanitation and sidewalks,” he added.
Upadhyay said the redevelopment of Khan market is also underway and will be resumed soon. “We have to put everyone at ease. A portion of traders disagree on the design, so a consensus is being built, but the council has given approval in principle to the plan.
Sanjeev Mehra from the Khan Market Traders Association said the NDMC should not wait for consensus on all points but immediately start working on the development of parking, sewer, drainage and of electricity. “This can only be achieved in phases. The council has ₹94 cr in the market corpus taken as a conversion fee and it should be used. NDMC wants to do the project in a consolidated way with a central view, but that’s not practical. The land has been available to them since 2011 for a car park project and we have demanded that a single ramp car park be developed,” he said.
