6 signs you’re spending too many hours by your side

Different people have different reasons for having a side job. For you, the motivation may come from having credit cards to pay off or wanting to save enough money to take a vacation. Or, you might just want more income available to you to pay your bills and enjoy your day-to-day hobbies and entertainment.

Whatever reason you’re getting a sideline, that second gig could help your financial situation improve. The more time you spend on it, the more income you will earn.

But be careful, there is such a thing as spending too much time looking after a side business. Here are six signs you’ve fallen into this trap.

1. You are perpetually exhausted

It’s one thing to occasionally work your team late into the night. But if you constantly lose sleep from so many hours of work, it is a sign that you are going too far. Lack of sleep is not only bad for your health, it can also put your main job at risk. If you are very tired, you might have productivity issues or even fall asleep during meetings.

2. You arrive late or stop early at your main job

Your sideline activity really shouldn’t interfere with your main job. If you’re arriving later and later or leaving your office early to devote more hours to that side gig, it’s a sign that you’re timing too much time. Increasing your income is great, but if you put your main salary at risk, you will only be financially straining.

3. You can’t remember the last time you socialized

It is important to take the time to hang out with friends, see family, and practice hobbies. If you haven’t been able to book a single night in weeks for social purposes, you’re probably spending too many hours enjoying yourself.

4. Your laundry and household chores are piling up

We all have busy times and things like laundry and dishes go wrong. But if you have reached the point where your house looks sloppy and you have run out of clean clothes to wear, then this is a sign that you may be spending too much time looking after yourself and not enough time to take care of your basic needs.

5. You ate take out every night because you don’t have time to cook

It’s not uncommon to get lazy and order take out for a quick and easy meal. But if you constantly have to do this due to an obvious lack of time for shopping and cooking, you may need to cut back on your work hours.

6. You are on the verge of burnout

Some people don’t mind working long hours and find ways to cope with a busy schedule. But if you’ve lost your ability to cope with this setup and your mental exhaustion has peaked, you may have been pushing too hard with your lateral restlessness, and it’s time to reduce that.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to maximize your side income. But don’t push yourself to the point where the hours you are putting in are unreasonable. If you do, you could end up suffering physical and mental health consequences, not to mention risking your main job. And it’s not worth it.
